Most of Ethiopia has milder temperatures than you would expect of a tropical country, because of its elevation at over 1,500m in the northern tourist spots including Addis Ababa. Daytime temperatures are usually around 22˚C and 28˚C, with cooler temperatures in the highlands which rise above 3,000m. Be sure to bring a sweater all year round due to Ethiopia’s elevation.
Ethiopia enjoys a mild climate, with average temperatures below 20°C in the highlands. This number can rise past 30°C on the lowland fringes of eastern, southern and western Ethiopia. The lower-lying southern Rift Valley and South Omo are a few degrees warmer. It is only in the northern Rift Valley where things get very hot.
Generally the best time to visit is between October and June, when it is the dry season. Rains tend to stop in early October, meaning afterwards the highlands are lush and green, making it the perfect time for trekking.
